Know the local fireworks laws before shooting them off

Happy July 4! As you celebrate Independence Day, potentially around fireworks, you should make sure to remember that fireworks can be dangerous. You should never “try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks,” for example, as the National Safety Council writes in its list of fireworks safety tips. Sparklers, the subject of yesterday’s tip and which may seem pretty harmless, “burn at about 2,000 degrees” and “account for more than 25% of emergency room visits for fireworks injuries” and half of visits for children under five.

You should also make sure you know the local fireworks laws before shooting them off, as each state has its own set. Local governments often build on state-wide laws further, so it’s important to do your research. For example, in the state of Michigan, like in many places, fireworks laws state that you must have expressed permission to use fireworks in a public setting like a commercial parking lot or a school (whose jurisdiction might include a school field).

Be safe, be smart and if you do watch a fireworks show tonight, use these tips to capture them in photos!
