We use Waze all the time when we’re on the road. It’s one of the best navigation apps out there for real-time routing, almost always finding the fastest way from Point A to Point B and helping us avoid traffic, construction and accidents. But aside from its functionality, Waze also lets you have a little fun.

Family road trip with two kids in the backseatI usually switch up the voice guidance depending on my mood. Sometimes it’s an English or Australian accent, but usually I pick one of Waze’s limited-time promotional voices like the Minions, Elmo or Kung Fu Panda to make the kids laugh their little heads off. Yes, I’ve taken driving directions from Po the Dragon Warrior dozens of times. But yesterday I discovered, when trying to find any new voices, that Waze allows users to take it up a notch.

I had no idea that Waze has a feature that lets you record your own voice or someone else’s for navigation prompts. So I recorded my five-year-old daughter giving directions. It only took about five minutes for her to go through all the main prompts like “turn left” or “in 0.1 miles turn right.” We also added a little pizazz to it and then I saved it as the active voice.

This morning when we got in the car for the school run, I didn’t say a word and turned on Waze. When the first direction came through in her little voice — “Let’s go!” — my wife and son’s jaws dropped. It was pure magic and I wish I had recorded their expressions. It was totally unexpected, hilarious and heartwarming.

If you want to try this with your own kids (or surprise your loved ones), here’s how to do it:

Open the Waze app

Tap “My Waze” > Settings (gear icon) > Voice & sound > Waze voice

Tap “Add a voice” and follow the prompts to record your own or someone else’s voice

You can record as many or as few prompts as you like. Just make sure to save it and select it when you’re done

This is a great little travel trick to make your next road trip that much more memorable. Let me know if you try this. I’d love to hear how your family reacts!
