How to get food delivered to your airport gate

One of my top travel tips is to not use room service when you’re staying at a hotel. It’s usually crazy expensive and not that good. Instead, if you’re hungry at a hotel, I recommend using a delivery app so you get food that’s good and reasonably priced and a local experience, too.

In fact, food delivery apps are getting so popular and easy-to-use that there’s now one for use exclusively in airports. AtYourGate is designed for passengers, flight crews, and airport employees in (for now) these nine airports:

  • Boston Logan Airport (BOS)
  • Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
  • JFK International Airport (JFK)
  • LaGuardia Airport (LGA)
  • Minneapolis Saint Paul Airport (MSP)
  • Ontario International Airport (ONT)
  • Portland International Airport (PDX)
  • San Diego International Airport (SAN)
  • San Jose International Airport (SJC)

The app is available for free for iOS or Android. To use it, as the site says, you just “open up the app, browse, order, and relax.” With AtYourGate, you can get food from restaurants, snacks/travel essentials from news and gifts store, coffee, and more to be delivered to your airport gate.

Trying it out

To try it out, I downloaded AtYourGate at 8:15am ET and put in JFK, where delivery was available in four terminals (1, 4, 7, and 8). Once I chose a terminal, I then was prompted to input my gate. But it looked like I needed to pre-order food. I don’t know if all the restaurants were simply super busy at that time, but all the JFK options I tried were only taking pre-orders starting at 11:40am ET. If that’s a theme, then that could be a problem.

But I then changed my location to LGA, and the app worked like it’s supposed to. I didn’t need to pre-order. To get food from Shake Shack, there was a $4.99 delivery fee, which is fine, but the wait was 30-40 minutes. That’s acceptable, too, but if you ask me, the wait times need to be a tad shorter if AtYourGate is to really catch on.

Have you used AtYourGate to get food delivered to your airport gate? What do you think?

At your gate only exists for Terminal B in LGA. False advertising.
