On April 25, 2023, Ma’Kiah Cherae Coleman, who was 19 at the time of the incident, and is from Glendale, Arizona, assaulted a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer at Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport. She grabbed the officer’s hair, forcing the officer’s head down against a baggage screening area table, and punched the officer in the head several times with a closed fist.

There is no video of what happened but there was a similar incident of another 19-year-old attacking TSA at PHX in 2019. The video, embedded above, shows how difficult TSA’s job can be and how violent some passengers are.

According to a TSA press release: “Coleman was sentenced last week by United States District Judge Douglas L. Rayes to four months in prison, followed by 36 months of supervised release for assaulting a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer at the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. Coleman pleaded guilty to assault on a Federal Officer inflicting bodily injury on April 23, 2024. In addition to being sentenced to prison, Coleman is banned from traveling by commercial aircraft during the three-year term of her court supervision.”

Coleman claimed she was pregnant at the time but that didn’t get her any sympathy from the online community. Here are some of the top comments on one of the original news stories about the incident (embedded above):

@cameroncurrie7208: Your pregnant so you want bail. That didn’t stop you from attacking 3 people.

@td3141: You’re pregnant, but you initiated a fight with multiple TSA agents? The really disturbing part is if she really is pregnant, she’s going to be responsible for the mental and emotional welfare of a child…

@LeafsAndCars: Over APPLE JUICE???  If she does this over juice what would she do in a more SERIOUS situation?? Unbelievable!

@meredithinserra4670: I am retired teacher and I bet she behaved the same way in elementary school, middle school, and high school.  This is what happens when parents let their children run wild, don’t set boundaries, don’t enforce consequences for bad behavior, and don’t model appropriate behavior for conflict resolution and respect of others.  I bet her mama acted the same way and that’s why this young woman thinks it’s okay to act like that.  I’ve seen it over and over again!

For those who have never flown before or haven’t flown in a while, remember there’s a maximum 3.4-ounce liquid rule. Per the TSA’s website: “Liquids, gels and aerosols packed in carry-on must follow the 3-1-1 liquids rule: 3.4 ounces or less per container. 1 quart size, clear, plastic, zip top bag (all liquids must fit in bag) 1 bag per passenger.”
