Apple’s latest operating system update, iOS 26, was announced at WWDC2025 (June 9-13, 2025) in Cupertino, California and it’s bringing significant changes for travelers who use an iPhone. Apple iPhone's iOS 26 update.Enhanced Boarding Passes in Apple Wallet

Travelers will notice improvements in how boarding passes are managed within Apple Wallet. The update introduces three key features designed to streamline the airport experience:

1. Live Activities

This feature provides real-time updates on your flight status, including gate changes and boarding times, directly on your Lock Screen or in the Dynamic Island. United Airlines has already implemented this feature, allowing passengers to access flight information without opening the app.

2. Airport Maps

iOS 26 integrates detailed airport terminal maps into your boarding pass, helping you navigate through security, find your gate and locate amenities.

3. Luggage Tracking with Find My

By attaching an Apple AirTag to your luggage, you can track its location in real-time through the Find My app. This integration ensures peace of mind, knowing exactly where your belongings are.

These enhancements are expected to be supported by major airlines including Air Canada, American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, United, Jetstar, Lufthansa, Qantas and Virgin Australia.

Availability

iOS 26 will be available this fall, coinciding with the release of the iPhone 17. Users with compatible devices can update their iPhones to use these new features.

Additional Travel-Friendly Features

Beyond boarding pass enhancements, iOS 26 introduces other travel-friendly features:

Digital ID for TSA Checkpoints

U.S. travelers can now store a digital version of their Real ID-compliant passport in Apple Wallet. This allows for quicker and more secure identity verification at TSA checkpoints. However, physical passports are still required for international travel.

Offline Access

Boarding passes stored in Apple Wallet are accessible even without an internet connection, ensuring you have your travel documents when you need them.

Environmental Impact

By opting for digital boarding passes, travelers can help reduce paper waste.
