I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: It seems like there’s been a huge increase in the number of airport and airline incidents in the last year or so. Is it because there are now cameras everywhere and everyone has access to social media so we see every incident? Is it because there was such a huge demand in travel after the pandemic, that companies weren’t able to properly train employees? Is it because most people now want to work from home so finding people to work in an office or at an airport is difficult, so the pickings are slim? Whatever it is, all of these close calls are disturbing.

The nose of an Air Canada aircraft was damaged when a catering truck hit it.Just last week, a Delta Air Lines widebody (A350) clipped a smaller regional jet (CRJ-900) while taxiing on the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) tarmac.

The latest incident, which should not have happened, was just caught on camera and shows a catering truck clipping the nose of an Air Canada widebody jet, just as the plane was boarding passengers.  Jay Robert’s A Fly Guy network has exclusive video (embedded below) on their Instagram with the caption: “Air Canada Has A Hit And Run.” The caption reads: “Again!!! An Air Canada A330 Has Its Nose Smashed By A Catering Truck. A recent Air Canada flight from Montreal (YUL) to Casablanca (CMN) was delayed after a catering truck from Newrest clipped the nose of the Airbus A330 (registration C-GHKR) 40 minutes before the scheduled departure of flight AC72. According to sources from AFGCCL, the aircraft sustained damage, and the airline had to swap it for another aircraft while the 24.5-year-old Airbus undergoes repairs.”

This is not the first time a catering truck has been involved in an airport accident and sadly, it’s probably not the last. Last April, View from the Wing reported that a Virgin Atlantic A350 en route to London’s Heathrow collided with Gate Gourmet catering SUV at New York’s JFK airport. “It appears that Gate Gourmet was somewhere they weren’t supposed to be. It doesn’t appear that anyone was hurt. I have to wonder if the driver was just distracted, or maybe failed to put the vehicle in park when getting out. Regardless, that vehicle shouldn’t have been there.”
