One of my readers, Dennis B. of Long Beach, California, recently shared his ordeal, which has a happy ending and a valuable tip for travelers. Dennis flew to Maui with his family on Hawaiian Airlines using his mileage points. The trip over went smoothly, but the return was not so lucky. A last-minute flight cancellation left them stranded for two extra days.

Despite long lines and multiple phone calls, the only immediate offer from the airline was a refund. Dennis had to pay out of pocket for two extra hotel nights and additional car rental fees while waiting for a new flight home.
After returning, he filed claims with Hawaiian Airlines, his Hawaiian Airlines Mastercard and Allianz Travel Insurance, which he purchased for $36 for himself and his wife when booking.
Here is how it worked out:
- Hawaiian Airlines reimbursed one night’s stay, part of his meals and issued two $500 travel vouchers
- Allianz Insurance covered the rest of his expenses in full
- The travel insurance payout arrived within four days of filing
Dennis’s advice to other travelers:
“Make sure to purchase the travel insurance if it is offered when buying your tickets. It really paid off for us.”
Tip: Always save your receipts, document all communications with the airline and contact both your airline and travel insurer if a disruption leaves you stranded. Even if an airline offers limited compensation, insurance can make you whole again.
