Southwest Airlines has made a string of unpopular changes this year, from ending its famous two free checked bags policy to bringing back expiration dates on flight credits. But now travelers finally have some good news to celebrate. Beginning October 24, the airline will roll out free inflight WiFi for all Rapid Rewards members on every flight, thanks to a new partnership with T-Mobile.
The deal makes Southwest the largest domestic carrier to offer free WiFi across its fleet of more than 800 aircraft. Passengers will be able to browse the web, stream movies, shop, or stay connected on social media without paying extra. The perk is available to any Rapid Rewards member regardless of their wireless provider, and travelers can sign up for the loyalty program either before boarding or while in the air.
“We’re pleased to partner with T-Mobile to bring free WiFi to all Rapid Rewards members. This is part of our ongoing commitment to elevate the cabin experience,” said Tony Roach, Southwest’s Executive Vice President and Chief Customer and Brand Officer.
T-Mobile, which has offered free inflight connectivity to its own customers since 2014, said the Southwest partnership was a natural fit. “We’re excited for Rapid Rewards members to experience free in-flight WiFi from takeoff to landing. No strings, no surprises,” said Mike Katz, President of Marketing, Strategy and Products at T-Mobile.
Southwest tested the service earlier this year and reported high satisfaction scores from passengers who used free WiFi during flights. The airline says it will continue to invest in improving reliability and performance as the rollout begins.
For travelers who have been frustrated by Southwest’s recent policy shifts, free WiFi might help soften the blow. At 35,000 feet, streaming your favorite show or knocking out emails without a fee could make flying Southwest feel a little more rewarding again.
