Yesterday, I mentioned in my newsletter that Southern California had just experienced a 5.2-magnitude earthquake. My wife and I both received a push notification with an advance warning that read: Earthquake: Drop, Cover, Hold On, Protect Yourself. It was unsettling, to say the least, but the 15-second advance warning was enough for me to jump under the kitchen table (my wife was a little bit in shock and slower to react).

Fortunately, it didn’t cause any damage—but something remarkable happened. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park released webcam footage (embedded below) from just before and during the quake.

In a press release, they wrote: “Elephants have the ability to feel sound through their feet. You’ll see the herd of African elephants instinctively circling the younger elephants to protect them. This behavior is known as an ‘alert circle’ and is intended to protect the young—and the entire herd—from threats.

“This video demonstrates the strong social family structure in elephant herds. The herd, consisting of Ndlula, Umngani, Khosi, and youngsters Zuli and Mkhaya, went back to normal after about 4 minutes, though they did stay close to one another.”

Pretty amazing! I took my kids to the San Diego Safari Park a year and a half ago, and it was without a doubt the closest thing to going on an African safari without traveling halfway around the world (or taking a hefty blow to your bank account.) Here are some photos and more details from our memorable trip to the San Diego Safari Park.
