Bangkok is one of my favorite cities in the world. There’s so much to see, do and eat, not to mention the luxury hotels that are surprisingly affordable. However, no matter where I travel, I’m not a fan of staying in high-rises. And after seeing videos (many embedded below) from the powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake in nearby Myanmar (about 800 miles away), that sentiment has only strengthened.

CCTV footage captured a couple relaxing (maybe a bit too much) on a raft atop a high-rise during the earthquake.

A tourist filmed the pool shaking uncontrollably (language NSFW).

It was an unbelievable scene in Bangkok: the earthquake hits while people swim in a skyscraper pool, and water sloshes like a tidal wave, yet they ride it out!

Thousands of liters of water from a swimming pool on the roof of a high-rise building fell on a crowd of people and literally washed them off the street.

A window cleaner was trapped on the wall of a building in Bangkok during the earthquake that struck the city yesterday, while water from rooftop pools spilled over.

The death toll rose to over 1,000 on Saturday, with the number expected to increase as search efforts continue. I can’t imagine what it must feel like to experience a 7.7 magnitude earthquake. I remember once being on the 19th floor of the Tokyo Hotel during a 4.4 earthquake (I think), and it felt like the building might collapse. In my panic, I rushed down the stairs, but everyone else around me seemed so calm, going about their business as if nothing was happening.

My heart is with everyone affected by this tragedy. Here are some ways to support relief efforts:

UNICEF
Project Hope
Red Cross
Doctors Without Borders
Save the Children
