Yesterday afternoon my social feeds lit up and nearly every newsletter in my inbox carried the same story: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are engaged. Swift herself shared the news on Instagram with the caption, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married 🧨.”

Her post included five photos taken in a garden. I joked to my wife that the pictures seemed staged after the moment, and it turns out that was true. Ed Kelce, Travis’ father, told Cleveland’s News 5’s John Kosich that the couple had actually gotten engaged almost two weeks earlier. He went on to give a detailed account of how it all happened.

According to Ed, the proposal did not take place on the day Swift made her announcement. “Travis actually did the proposal, oh, maybe two weeks, not quite two weeks ago.” He explained further, “He was going to put it off till this week. I think she was getting maybe a little antsy, but he was going to put her off till this week to, you know, make some grand thing, to make it a big special event. And I told him repeatedly, you know, you could do it on the side of the road, do it any place that makes it a special event … when you get down on one knee and ask her to marry you.” Ed added that Taylor’s father, Scott Swift, was giving Travis the same advice.

The actual proposal took place in the garden at Travis’ home in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. “He got her out there, they were about to go out to dinner, and he said, ‘let’s go out and have a glass of wine’ … they got out there, and that’s when he asked her, and it was beautiful,” Ed recalled.

Afterward, the couple began calling their loved ones. Ed said he learned of the engagement while attending a Philadelphia Eagles practice. “They started FaceTiming all their loved ones and when he got the call while he was at a Philadelphia Eagles practice he knew the two were engaged. I was at … an Eagles practice, a public practice that they had a lot of people at, well, the Eagles had 60,000 people at a public practice two weeks ago on a Sunday night.”

Ed also revealed that he had known about his son’s plans for some time. He expected Travis might even propose during last year’s NFL season.

He closed the interview by sharing that he and Travis’ mother visited Kansas City for dinner at their son’s house. Taylor cooked for them, and Ed said he has never seen Travis happier than he is now with Swift.
