Lock Your Bag on Cruises and Bus Tours
I always think it’s crazy when I see people leave their bags out in the hallway the night before they get off a cruise, or before they change hotels on a bus tour. As with any time bags are left unattended, leaving a bag for pickup is still a huge risk as you never know if someone might steal something from your bag or worse, put something inside. Always bring a lock and lock your bag before putting it out in the hallway, and don’t put anything of real value in there. Always place the important and expensive items in your carry-on.

We have found over our years of traveling, nothing can prevent someone from getting into your bags if they want to. Most locks are very simple to open, so instead of locks, we use wire ties. This does not prevent someone from cutting them and opening the bags, but it does put us on notice that they were tampered with. Using a colored tie also helps to prevent them from simply replacing them.

Travel Tip: Locking bags. A lock on the bag does not stop someone scooping the bag up and wandering off with it. I suggest also travelling with a small bike chain. Bags can be tied together or even to luggage racks and those pesky snatchers will move on to an easier target.
