My family and I spent an action-packed four days in Chicago this summer and stayed at the Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile, which was a fantastic option for our family. Chicago is ripe with luxury hotels. The city’s best properties range from grand Gold Coast institutions and polished international names to design-forward newcomers overlooking the Chicago River. What they share is a sense of place: spectacular architecture, destination-worthy restaurants, serious spas and the kind of service that can turn a weekend in Chicago into an occasion.
Whether you want to wake up to views of Lake Michigan, spend the afternoon shopping along Michigan Avenue, retreat to a spa between museum visits or stay within walking distance of the West Loop’s celebrated restaurants, these are 11 of the best luxury hotels in Chicago.
Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile
A distinctly European option in the Gold Coast, Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile combines French sensibility with an excellent downtown location. Why you should stay here: Choose the Sofitel if you want sophisticated luxury without the formality of some of Chicago’s grander five-star hotels. Rooms have a clean, modern feel, and the property works especially well for couples, business travelers and anyone who wants to walk to Michigan Avenue while retreating to a slightly calmer pocket of the neighborhood at night.
Good to know: If views matter to you, request a room on a higher floor. Ours had a fantastic outlook across the Chicago skyline, with striking architecture in the foreground and Lake Michigan beyond.
Park Hyatt Chicago
Park Hyatt Chicago occupies one of the city’s most enviable addresses, directly on Michigan Avenue opposite the historic Water Tower. Following a major reimagining, the hotel feels less like a traditional grand hotel and more like an exceptionally polished private residence, with contemporary art, restrained interiors and large windows framing the city and Lake Michigan.
Known for: Residential-style rooms, Water Tower and lake views, NoMI, an excellent 25-yard indoor lap pool, NoMI Spa and understated service.
Why you should stay here: This is one of Chicago’s strongest choices for travelers who prefer quiet sophistication over spectacle. Wellness-minded travelers will especially appreciate having a legitimate lap pool and spa in the middle of downtown.
Good to know: The view category matters here. If Chicago scenery is part of the reason you are splurging, reserve a lake- or Water Tower-view room rather than leaving the outlook to chance; select categories even include outdoor terraces.
Four Seasons Hotel Chicago
Perched above North Michigan Avenue in the 900 North Michigan complex, Four Seasons Hotel Chicago delivers classic five-star hospitality with a distinctly contemporary edge. The location is also superb for first-time visitors who want shopping, dining and the lakefront close at hand.
Good to know: Families should take full advantage of the children’s programming rather than treating this simply as an adult luxury hotel. The hotel offers dedicated kid-friendly amenities and activities, making it one of the easiest high-end Chicago choices when traveling with children.
The Langham, Chicago
The Langham occupies a landmark Mies van der Rohe skyscraper along the Chicago River and the architecture alone gives the hotel a remarkable sense of place. Travelers who appreciate a traditional luxury-hotel experience (with concierge service and plenty happening under one roof) will feel at home here.
Good to know: If your budget allows, compare a Club-level rate with the price of a standard room before booking. The Club experience adds dedicated service and food-and-beverage presentations throughout the day and can make sense for guests planning to spend substantial time at the hotel.
Nobu Hotel Chicago
Nobu brings a completely different flavor of luxury to Chicago. Located in Fulton Market, the hotel blends Japanese minimalism, industrial influences and the energy of the West Loop, placing guests in one of the city’s most exciting dining neighborhoods with one of its most recognizable restaurants downstairs.

Tucked into the Gold Coast just off Rush Street, Waldorf Astoria Chicago channels Parisian residential elegance rather than big-city hotel bustle. The intimate courtyard arrival, generously proportioned accommodations and serious spa program make it one of the city’s best options for a romantic or restorative escape.
Known for: Parisian-inspired design, suites with fireplaces and private terraces, personalized service, a 14,000-square-foot spa and an indoor lap pool.
Why you should stay here: This is the hotel for travelers who want to disappear into their room for a while. Reserve the right suite and you can have a fireplace, terrace and separate living area waiting upstairs, while the spa and pool turn an ordinary city break into a genuine wellness weekend. Yet Rush Street, Oak Street and Michigan Avenue remain only minutes away.
Good to know: Room categories vary considerably, so read the descriptions closely. Fireplaces and terraces are signature Waldorf Astoria Chicago features, but they aren’t universal; book the specific category that guarantees the amenity you want.
Peninsula Chicago
The Peninsula Chicago is one of the city’s benchmark luxury hotels, combining Asian hospitality traditions with an unmistakably Chicago setting just off Michigan Avenue. Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2026, the hotel remains a destination in its own right thanks to its spacious accommodations, formidable spa, acclaimed restaurants and consistently polished sense of occasion.
Known for: Exceptional service, large rooms, The Peninsula Spa, a half-Olympic-length indoor pool, afternoon tea, Shanghai Terrace, Z Bar and a prime Magnificent Mile location.
Why you should stay here: The Peninsula is the choice when you want the full grand-hotel experience and don’t want to compromise. Breakfast or afternoon tea beneath The Lobby’s soaring windows can lead into a spa afternoon, dinner at Shanghai Terrace and cocktails at Z Bar, all without leaving the building. It is luxurious without being sterile and an excellent choice for celebrations and multigenerational trips.
Good to know: Ask about Peninsula Time when booking directly. The program offers eligible guests considerably more flexibility around arrival and departure, including the possibility of very early check-in and late check-out, subject to the program’s terms, an unusually valuable luxury in a city hotel.
Pendry Chicago
Pendry Chicago occupies the spectacular 1929 Carbide & Carbon Building, one of Michigan Avenue’s great Art Deco landmarks. Rather than turning the building into a museum piece, Pendry mixes its historic glamour with a younger, more social style of luxury, complete with contemporary rooms, energetic bars and a rooftop overlooking the city.
Known for: Art Deco architecture, the Carbide & Carbon Building, stylish contemporary interiors, Bar Pendry, French-inspired dining and seasonal rooftop cocktails at Château Carbide.
Why you should stay here: Pendry is ideal for travelers who want design and nightlife as much as traditional luxury. Its Michigan Avenue location puts the Riverwalk and Millennium Park within easy walking distance, while the hotel’s bars make it easy to transition from sightseeing to an evening out. Higher-floor accommodations add impressive architectural, river and city views.
Good to know: Château Carbide is seasonal and can close for private events, so don’t build an evening around the rooftop without checking its current schedule. Light sleepers should also request a quieter room location as this is an energetic downtown setting.
The St. Regis Chicago
One of the most striking additions to Chicago’s luxury-hotel landscape, The St. Regis Chicago rises where the Chicago River approaches Lake Michigan inside Jeanne Gang’s instantly recognizable tower. The interiors match the drama outside, with floor-to-ceiling views, expansive accommodations, a destination spa and two restaurants that have quickly become attractions in their own right.
Known for: Spectacular architecture, river and lake views, St. Regis Butler Service in premier suites, a large wellness floor, Miru, Tre Dita and signature St. Regis rituals.
Why you should stay here: Choose the St. Regis if you want Chicago’s newer expression of five-star luxury. Rooms feel modern and glamorous rather than traditional, and the waterfront position provides some extraordinary perspectives on the skyline. Add a spa and indoor pool plus Miru and Tre Dita and the hotel works particularly well for a celebratory weekend when the property itself is part of the itinerary.
Good to know: If arriving by taxi, rideshare or car, specify Upper Wacker Drive. Chicago’s multilevel street system can confuse navigation apps and getting the approach right can save an unnecessarily circuitous arrival.
The Drake
The Drake is less about contemporary five-star flash than the romance of staying inside a piece of Chicago history. Open since 1920 at the top of Michigan Avenue, the grand Gold Coast hotel has welcomed generations of celebrities, dignitaries and travelers, and its Palm Court remains one of the city’s quintessential settings for afternoon tea.
Known for: Old-school Chicago glamour, more than a century of history, Palm Court afternoon tea, Coq d’Or, its Magnificent Mile address and proximity to Oak Street Beach.
Why you should stay here: Book The Drake because you value atmosphere and history as much as cutting-edge luxury. There is something wonderfully Chicago about walking out the door toward Lake Michigan and Oak Street Beach, then returning for tea beneath the chandeliers of Palm Court or a drink at Coq d’Or. For travelers who prefer storied hotels to sleek new towers, few addresses in the city have more personality.
Good to know: Come with the right expectations: The Drake is a historic grande dame, not a newly built contemporary resort. Lean into that heritage when selecting your room and make a Palm Court tea reservation in advance if the experience is high on your list.
