Good news for travelers age 18-22: Last week, United Airlines announced that when a traveler inside that age window books a qualifying flight through the United app, he or she will be eligible for a 10% discount. Qualifying flights include those within the U.S., Canada and Mexico and to a few additional international destinations, and they must be purchased by December 31 of this year. In addition, per USA TODAY, the booked passenger must be a MileagePlus member (with birthdate logged in the member’s profile). Bookings must also be in economy class, and reservations can include only one passenger. Here’s more on this new United promotion and how to apply it, straight from the source.
If you’re wondering what inspired this unique move from United, here’s what Will Ellingson, principal of planning and integration for MileagePlus, told USA TODAY: “The reason why we’re doing this is we’re really interested in starting a relationship with newer, younger customers.”

United also notes on its promotion page that “if you’re one of the first 25,000 travelers who books a flight with this discount, [United will] offset your share of the carbon emissions associated with that flight.”

In announcing the promotion on their Instagram account, it was sad that the only individual that United was able to find and promote was someone who disregards and breaks US laws and loves to fly his drone in national parks. After his next court date, that individual may not even be eligible to visit the US again. I am sure that there is some 18 to 22 year old out there that is more deserving.
