NYC from an Uber
NYC from an Uber

My buddy Lee Abbamonte (his website is LeeAbbamonte.com) posted a great tip on his Facebook page: “Just a friendly travel tip for New Yorkers or those traveling from Newark into Manhattan. I normally refuse to use Uber Pool but from Newark into Manhattan it’s $29 flat fare versus $60-$110 with regular Uber or taxi. I know there’s a train but that sucks. Anyway, I’ve taken it 4 times now since it started that deal and I’ve never shared with anyone. That’s pretty good value.” I agree.

Uber Pool is also available at many major U.S. airports and I know at LAX that Uber drivers can’t drive around the horseshoe again to get another passenger (I was told by an Uber executive), and I think it’s the same at every airport. So if you’re at Terminal 7, you’ll be the last stop at the airport. Here are the current savings at some major airports (Uber Pool vs. Uber/taxi):

  • LAX to downtown: $13 with Uber Pool/$28 normally
  • SFO to city: $20/$31
  • JFK to Manhattan: $35/$58
  • Chicago O’Hare to downtown: $19/$34
  • Miami to South Beach: $13/$20

To find out the price or if Uber Pool is available at the airport you’re going to, just punch in the airport (just replace your current location) and your destination (see full explanation here). If you haven’t tried Uber yet, here’s my code (uberjohnnyjet) to get $20 off your first ride. If you prefer Lyft, my code is JOHNNY1827.

I’m a big Uber user, but never to get from EWR to Manhattan.

I disagree that NJ transit from EWR is undesirable, and at $13 is 60% cheaper than Uber pooling. It will also get you into central Manhattan faster than driving.

If you are determined to get a ride, ride a limo from EWR to Manhattan for $46 with carmellimo.com ($17 more than Uber pooling).

My suggestion: Anytime you need to get from an airport to a final destination, visit the website of the airport you are flying into. There is always a transportation page showing you all your transportation options from the airport including hotel shuttles, commercial shuttles, rail and public transit with the fares, along with average fare for taxis and any ride share options.

Hope this saves you money on route to your final destination!

Use the Airporter buses in NYC area. Maybe, $16.
