Delta Air Lines is adding two new Mediterranean escapes to its route map, bringing nonstop flights from New York-JFK to Sardinia and Malta starting Summer 2026. The announcement comes after Delta’s first-ever Route Race, where SkyMiles Members and employees voted on the airline’s next European destinations. Members chose Sardinia while employees picked Malta, so both islands are joining Delta’s network.

Sardinia and Malta have been gaining popularity among U.S. travelers for years so this move makes perfect sense. I had guessed United would make the leap first, but it looks like Delta swooped in.
Johnny Jet in Costa Smeralda
I’ve been to Sardinia, and I recently ran into a friend who just returned. We agreed it’s stunning but, in my opinion, a bit overpriced — especially Costa Smeralda. According to my friend, lunch for him and his wife cost 600 euros. I’ve never been to Malta, but it’s high on my list, especially since my son is a fan of the Jurassic Park films, some of which were shot there.

Costa Smeralda Sardigna Sardinia is known for its rugged cliffs, turquoise coves and rich culinary traditions. Beyond its scenic beauty, Sardinia is one of the world’s five Blue Zones, regions where people live longer thanks to a combination of healthy eating, active living and strong community ties. Delta will operate four weekly flights from JFK to Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport starting May 20, 2026, offering travelers a chance to experience the island’s mix of history, culture and coastal relaxation firsthand.

Malta: History, Sun and Sea

Malta, chosen by Delta employees, combines UNESCO-listed streets, ancient megalithic temples, turquoise bays and dramatic cliffs. Travelers can explore Valletta’s historic streets, sail to the Blue Lagoon or dive shipwrecks, all while soaking in Mediterranean sun. Delta will operate three weekly flights from JFK to Malta International Airport beginning June 7, 2026.

Premium Experience Across the Atlantic

Both routes will be served on Delta’s Boeing 767-300ER with four travel experiences: Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort and Delta Main. Delta One passengers will enjoy lie-flat seats, chef-curated meals, Missoni-designed amenities and Taittinger champagne. All passengers benefit from curated dining, Delta Studio entertainment and fast, free Delta Sync Wi-Fi, ensuring the journey is as enjoyable as the destination.

Expanding Access to the Mediterranean

With Sardinia and Malta, Delta strengthens its position as the largest U.S. carrier to Italy while adding a new gateway to the Mediterranean. These routes mark another milestone in Delta’s transatlantic expansion, connecting travelers to some of Europe’s most sought-after destinations.

Local officials expressed excitement over the new service. Silvio Pippobello, CEO of Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport, called the nonstop flight a “historic and strategic milestone” for Sardinia, opening new tourism and business opportunities. Alan Borg, CEO of Malta International Airport, described the route as “a landmark development” that will attract discerning North American travelers and expand Malta’s global reach.

For travelers dreaming of sun, history and Mediterranean charm, Delta’s new flights make getting there easier than ever. Sardinia and Malta may be gorgeous and sometimes pricey but now U.S. travelers can reach both nonstop from New York, making them more accessible for your next European adventure.

Costa Smeralda Sardigna TrafficExpect both of these destinations to be added to every travel publication’s top travel destinations lists for 2026. Just avoid Sardinia in August when all the locals from the mainland travel there and traffic is unbearable.
