Last night, I went to a party at Qantas’ hangar at LAX for the launch of their new commercial. It was my first time in their hangar and hopefully not the last since it’s an epic space and surprisingly, a great place to host a party – especially when there’s a widebody aircraft inside. It was the airline’s 787 but partygoers couldn’t go near it since it was locked up.

The party was a much bigger deal than one might expect since Qantas’ CEO, Vanessa Hudson, flew in from Sydney, as did many other executives and attendees. Rober Isom, CEO of American Airlines, was also in the house (hangar) as well some stars like Baz Luhrmann, Australian writer, producer and director who served as creative consultant.

The one star many were hoping was going to be there was Australian actor Chris Hemsworth, since he voiced the commercial. The 60-second commercial or “campaign video” as the Aussies call it, is embedded below. It’s titled “Australia in the Sky” and features real Qantas crew alongside some Aussie celebs. Charlee Fraser (Furiosa, Anyone but You), Australian model Jess Hart, as well as American director Will Gluck (Anyone but You) were all in attendance.

The ‘Australia in the Sky’ commercial showcases why Qantas is the only airline that makes customers feel like they’ve arrived in Australia the moment they step onboard, from its warm Australian hospitality to its premium inflight food and wine from Australian producers.

The commercial reminded me of the old Australia Tourism commercials with Paul Hogan (Crocodile Dundee), which gave you a sense of place and made travelers excited to visit the Land Down Under. Both of them are embedded below.

They filmed the commercial in Los Angeles on the Qantas A380 and at scenic locations across Australia including Bondi Beach.
