There’s been unrelenting rain in Hawaii. My cousin told me it’s the “most rain I have ever seen” and that’s saying something because he’s lived there for years and has been all over the world. American and United have issued a Hawaiian Islands Severe Weather travel waivers. United’s is for travel through today (March 15), allowing voluntary changes for flights to, from or through Honolulu (HNL), Kahului (OGG), Kailua-Kona (KOA), and Lihue (LIH). I imagine they will be extended.

Forecasters expect the storm to gradually ease, but until conditions improve, both residents and travelers are being asked to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel. For visitors planning a trip to Hawaii this week, flexibility and patience will likely be essential as the islands deal with the aftermath of this unusually intense weather event.

Here’s just some of the footage I’ve seen social:

Maui:

Photos of the only Target store in Maui (in Kahului) has 4-6” of water throughout the store. The field behind Target is overflowing into the back parking lot and coming through their loading dock doors.

Oahu:

I’ve walked this route dozens of times in front of Outrigger on the Reef and it’s shocking to see something like this…

The Road to Hana, Maui Facebook page posted an important message:We are getting multiple posts asking about traveling the Road to Hāna tomorrow or Monday. Let me state this for @everyone in no uncertain terms. No you should not be on the Hana Highway. Period. They are still getting Heavy rain and strong winds in and around Hāna. Sections of the Hana Highway has been cleared enough for local traffic to access their homes and loved ones, but is in NO WAY passable for visitor traffic. There are utility lines down everywhere and no power to much of the island. NO ONE SHOULD BE DRIVING THE ROAD TO HĀNA FOR AT LEAST THE NEXT COUPLE DAYS AFTER THIS STORM PASSES. State and County parks are closed. The storm is supposed to start letting up tomorrow, hopefully. PLEASE STAY OFF ALL MAUI ROADWAYS, ESPECIALLY THE ROAD TO HANA FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.”
