As summer travel season heats up, airports are getting busier … and so are cybercriminals. While you’re busy planning your vacation, hackers may be planning to steal your data. In today’s tech-driven world, staying cyber-safe is just as important as remembering your passport. And because of this, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently issued a timely reminder.

In a recent Facebook post, TSA warned:

“In this technology age, cybersecurity has never been more important. You’ve likely heard about things like email scams and social media scams (tip: don’t accept that friend request from your buddy’s “new” profile), but today we want to share our two best tips for staying cyber safe at airports while you’re traveling.

“Hackers can install malware at USB ports (we’ve been told that’s called “juice/port jacking”). So, when you’re at an airport do not plug your phone directly into a USB port. Bring your TSA-compliant power brick or battery pack and plug in there.

“Don’t use free public WiFi, especially if you’re planning to make any online purchases. Do not ever enter any sensitive info while using unsecure WiFi.

“Thanks to our IT team for these tips!”

Here’s what travelers need to know to protect their personal information while flying this summer.

What Is Juice Jacking?

It might sound like something from a spy movie, but juice jacking, something we’ve written about before, is a very real threat. When you plug your phone into a public USB charging port, like those found at airport gates, lounges or cafes, you might also be unknowingly connecting to a hidden data connection.

Hackers can tamper with these USB ports to install malware or steal personal data from your device. Just like that, your private emails, credit card information or even banking apps could be compromised.

TSA’s Two Key Cybersecurity Tips

The TSA is encouraging travelers to follow these essential steps to stay safe while on the go:

1. Avoid Public USB Charging Ports

-Bring your own TSA-compliant portable phone charger or wall plug adapter.

-Use a charging-only cable, which doesn’t allow data transfer, if you must use a public port. Or use a USB data blocker. Just attach it between your USB cable and charger to physically block data transfer and syncing

-Better yet, charge your device using a standard power outlet, not a USB port.

2. Skip the Free Public WiFi

-Airport WiFi might be convenient, but it’s often unsecured, making it a playground for cybercriminals.

-Don’t enter passwords, make purchases or log into sensitive accounts over public WiFi.

-If you need to go online, use a secure VPN (Virtual Private Network) to encrypt your connection.

More Tips for Safe Summer Travel

In addition to TSA’s advice, here are a few more easy ways to protect yourself on the go:

Keep your devices updated: Software updates often include security fixes. Update your phone, apps and antivirus software before you travel.

Use two-factor authentication: Enable it on key accounts (email, bank, social media) for an extra layer of protection.

Be cautious of public computers: Avoid logging into personal accounts from shared terminals or internet cafes.

Label your gear: Power banks, cables and other accessories are easy to lose in the shuffle. Mark them with your name or initials.

Set a screen lock: If your phone is lost or stolen, a PIN, fingerprint or facial recognition can stop a thief from accessing your data.

Travel is all about making memories, not identity theft headaches. With just a few simple precautions, you can stay connected and protected no matter where your summer adventures take you.
