YouTube video

In honor of Jack’s first plane ride—and the fact that I’m featuring this amazing car seat and baby stroller—I thought it made sense to highlight one of the videos I watched in preparation for the trip. I’ve since flown with him again.

The TSA has a one-minute-and-14 second video (above) that shows how to properly go through a security checkpoint with a baby. Sadly, I had no idea what to expect, so I was happy to find this video and relieved to see the TSA acknowledge that traveling with a baby requires a variety of essentials including food, carriers, diapers, and other care items. From the video:

  1. Strollers/car seats need to be folded up and put on the belt to be screened. However, our stroller/car seat got stuck in the screening machine yesterday at DCA (I must’ve put it in on the wrong side since it didn’t get stuck at LAX) so the agents had to pull it back out and then search it manually.
  2. You can bring more than the 3.4 ounces of breast milk, formula, milk products, juice, teethers, bottled water, baby food, and essential liquid non-prescription medications. They will most likely need additional screening, which the TSA agents did in LAX but didn’t do at DCA.
  3. You can carry your child through the X-ray machine, which is FDA-approved and supposedly not harmful for the child. You can also opt to have you or your child searched without using the machine but it will take a lot longer.
  4. Kids under 12 don’t need to take their shoes off.
  5. You will never be separated from your child.

And I thought you were supposed to put the baby in a bin and send them through the Xray!

Thankfully I had viewed this video many years ago. Once, when I traveled on a long, connecting flight with my daughter, I brought a six-pack of formula. When the TSA agent challenged me about the amount of formula I was carrying, I referred to this video and had printed the rules about formula amounts. He backed-off after that!
