I just published a post with video footage shared by passengers from inside the Delta Air Lines airplane that crashed in Toronto (YYZ) on Monday, along with tips for travelers.

Delta Air Lines footage from Toronto on Monday.Within a few minutes of publishing that piece, the clearest footage of DL4819 landing at YYZ was posted on social by @airmainengineer. It’s embedded below with the caption: “Clearest footage showing the crash moment of Delta – Endeavor Air CRJ-900 Flight DL4819 from Minneapolis (MSP) to Toronto (YYZ) with registration N932XJ.”

It looks like the video was taken by the first officer of another plane while preparing for takeoff. It’s amazing that the pilot was able to capture the footage but it’s also surprising he or she was on their phone.

What’s also surprising is how the accident happened. A captain left a comment on my first post about the incident stating: “Most accidents are a combination of pilot error, mechanical, and external conditions. These issues are compounded by the inexperience of pilots and controllers. This is also made worse by not enough knowledge by pilots of their aircraft and controllers not understanding RCR factors depending on type of Jet. There is no excuse for flipping an airplane unless you had a microburst at ground level under marginal RCR conditions and pilot input at touchdown.

I thought the accident happened due to a junior pilot turning too early to get off of the runway but that’s clearly not the case.

As @FosterByron pointed out in the comments: “Right main gear collapsed causing right wing to dip into the ground and snap off. Left wing continued to generate lift, causing the plane to roll over. Wild.”

It is wild and what’s even wilder is that everyone survived. Huge kudos to all the crew members for getting everyone, including themselves, out safely. It’s important for travelers to remember that flight attendants are not on board an aircraft to pass out snacks and serve drinks. They are charged with the responsibility of ensuring the safety and welfare of all passengers on the aircraft. In the event of an emergency, they are the first responders. And the flight crew of Delta flight 4819 deserve a huge round of applause.
