It looks like former President Joe Biden is taking advantage of his time off and criss-crossing the country for public appearances. On Saturday, I reported that he flew American Airlines (AA) from Minneapolis to Philadelphia (PHL) after attending the funeral of Minnesota lawmaker State Representative Melissa Hortman.

American Airlines A321neo May 2025The story went viral because AA bumped a first class passenger back to coach to accommodate him. The passenger commented on my story and said, “I’m the guy who was bumped. My wife stayed in first class and interacted with Mr. Biden. She is truly grateful for how gracious he was. And my daughter is overwhelmed by the blessing he wrote in her card.”

Biden was back in PHL the following day to fly to San Diego to speak at the SHRM Conference (Human Resource Management). He was photographed with a passenger in the Admirals Club Lounge. The passenger wrote on Instagram: “Just me meeting JB. NBD. I’m literally sitting by the bathroom on my laptop in the AA lounge and I look up. Standing right there is the President. He then asked me how much I can curl and put his head on my bicep. Surreal.”

A few minutes later, another passenger also posted a photo on Instagram of the former President boarding the Airbus A321neo. His caption read: “When Joe Biden casually gets on your flight from Philly to San Diego 😱. There’s Secret Service in my row.”

I once flew with Tipper Gore when her husband was Vice President. It was on a United Airlines Los Angeles (LAX) to San Francisco (SFO) flight. She sat in the very first row of economy and I was about four rows behind her. Next to me was a Secret Service agent who was really cool. We had a mutual friend, so he shared more than he probably would normally.

And just like on my flight, when the plane landed, Secret Service escorted the former President off the plane first and down the stairs so he didn’t have to go into the terminal.

I do find it surprising that the former President is flying commercial, but it’s not surprising that if he’s going to fly commercial he would choose American Airlines, since one of their hubs (Philadelphia) is just 22 miles from his home in Delaware.
