On Sunday, the Boston Red Sox Delta charter flight to Minnesota was so turbulent they diverted to Detroit. Last night a Delta Air Lines flight (DL56) from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam experienced severe turbulence. It diverted to Minneapolis (MSP). And there’s video of the aftermath.

According to Delta, twenty-five people out of the 275 passengers and 13 crew members were hospitalized. When the Airbus A330-900 landed safely just before 8 p.m. it was met by the Minneapolis-St. Paul Fire Department and paramedics.

Flightradar24 showed the flight path (embedded below).

One passenger who goes by @losebolt on Threads shared this video with the caption: “Airplane got hit with turbulence and flipped on side, then drop 35 feet… the steward had a couple of broken legs and the drink cart flew through the air and a lot of people got head injuries. I’m OK but we are changing planes and we’re gonna be delayed a while so I’m gonna be late and I’m a little shook up. No snakkiee snak”

Someone on X (formerly Twitter) shared a photo of the galley with food and trays all over the floor. @TaraBull808 asked, “Delta Flight from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam Hits Severe Turbulence, 25 Passengers Hospitalized. What’s going on?”

Here were some of the responses:

@Alex78157809
Delta’s galley looks like a post-apocalyptic snack bar now

@MrsWard007v2
Climate intervention, cloud seeding… and it’s going to get worse.

Turbulence. Normal. That’s why you keep your seatbelt on and get a seat for your children.

In my daily travel tip newsletter (you can sign up for free) yesterday, I included United Airlines (Delta did not) issued a travel waiver for Denver CO (DEN) and Chicago for severe thunderstorms. So they experienced that nasty weather and combined with going over the Rocky Mountains makes for a bumpy flight. But for 25 people to get hospitalized is shocking and upsetting. This must’ve been an awful and traumatic experience for everyone on board. Not sure I would get back on a plane right after it. I would need a day or two (at least) to recover.

This is not related but another Delta passenger shared on social media how her seatmate ended up wetting their seat because they had to go and turbulence was so bad. “Towards the end of my flight, everyone was instructed to stay in their seats due to turbulence. The person next to me attempted to get up & was told to sit back down. Well, we just landed & he quickly jumped up & ran. Perhaps the flight attendant should’ve let him go after all. 😬”

When I fly I make sure I use the bathroom just before boarding, immediately after takeoff (right when the seatbelt sign goes off), then every hour to stretch my legs and then again just before descent. That’s because I’ve been in those situations where I really had to go but the seatbelt sign was on due to turbulence and you couldn’t go. Always honor the seatbelt sign and wear your seatbelt tight. You can bet those that were hospitalized didn’t.
