I thought I was a huge aviation geek but after learning about this 24/7 live YouTube channel for LAX, I realized I’ve got nothing on these guys. In addition to their 24/7 live feed, they do a seven-hour radio-style show three times a week with their big show on Sundays. They do it from one of the best plane spotting spots at LAX – Jim Clutter Park on Imperial Hill (here are the directions) just above Imperial Highway near Runway 25L. This week, however, they were in New York at JFK, and tomorrow they will be at ONT airport, so it looks like they might be taking their show on the road, which is awesome.

I first heard about these guys at a CrankyFlier plane spotting event next to In-N-Out, but lately I’ve seen them getting some major news coverage, including in the Hollywood Reporter, who just wrote a story titled “How a Live-Feed From LAX Became YouTube’s Latest Hit.”

As the Hollywood Reporter describes it: “Think of it as the Bob Rossification of air travel: planes taking off and landing in high def, narrated in soothing tones by amateur broadcasters who’ve turned this niche pastime into a big-time business.”

Kevin Ray, the creator of Airline Videos Live, is a former TV news photographer who launched the channel as a side hustle in 2019. Two years later, he quit his day job to take it to the next level and it appears he’s well on his way.

I was just watching their behind-the-scenes video recorded yesterday (embedded above), and I’m amazed at how much equipment they have out there – from multiple cameras with mega zoom lenses to a DJ-style board to control the action, including pumping in music, live ATC so you can hear the interaction between air traffic control and the pilots, monitors to see what they’re filming, and I assume a flight tracker, along with a handful of portable Jackery Power Stations (I have one for emergencies) to power it all.

You can watch the replay of their Sunday live show to see what a great job they do keeping aviation geeks from around the world interested in their channel, as well as discussing their travels and the travel news of the day.

Ray told the Hollywood Reporter: “We’ve got people that are afraid of flying that watch because it calms their fears. I almost feel like it’s my job to be a comfort for a lot of people around the world.” I used to be afraid to fly myself, so I can totally understand this. I wish they were around a few decades ago, but I’m glad they’re here now because watching their show gets me all pumped up to get on a plane and travel the world or just pass time dreaming of traveling the globe.
