This is great news for anyone planning a trip to French Polynesia or flying Air Tahiti Nui to Paris. The airline just announced that it has signed an agreement with SpaceX to install Starlink Wi-Fi across its entire fleet of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. Best of all, the service will be completely free for passengers in every cabin, including economy.

According to a press release issued today (November 3, 2026), Air Tahiti Nui expects to begin rolling out Starlink in 2027. The airline hasn’t announced an exact launch date or when all of its aircraft will be equipped but this is a welcome upgrade, especially for travelers taking its long-haul flights across the Pacific or Atlantic.

I’ve flown Air Tahiti Nui twice in the past 12 months, once from Los Angeles (LAX) to Papeete (PPT) in November 2025 and again from LAX to Paris (CDG) in June 2026. Both times, I flew in economy with my wife and two kids and both experiences were very good. However, there was one thing I really missed: being able to get some work done during the flight.

On our seven-and-a-half-hour flight to Tahiti (photo above), I had planned to work on my laptop but quickly realized that Air Tahiti Nui doesn’t have traditional power outlets in economy. There are USB ports for charging phones but my Lenovo laptop barely holds a two-hour charge, so I ended up watching movies instead.

The same thing happened on our 10-hour flight to Paris (photo above). Between the lack of power outlets and the tight economy seats, especially when the person in front reclines, working on a laptop wasn’t easy.

That’s why I’m so excited about this announcement. If I’d had free, high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi on either of those flights, I could have gotten a lot of work done and the flights would have gone by even faster. Of course, I’d still need to figure out how to keep my laptop charged but at least I could have answered emails, worked on stories and caught up on other tasks using my phone or another device.

What travelers can expect from Starlink

Air Tahiti Nui says its new Starlink service will offer ultra-high-speed connectivity with latency of just 25 to 30 milliseconds. For those who aren’t familiar with the technical jargon, lower latency generally means less delay when you’re doing things online, such as making calls, browsing websites or using interactive applications.

According to the airline, passengers will be able to use the internet from takeoff to landing, including over the oceans and some of the most remote parts of the world. That’s particularly important for an airline like Air Tahiti Nui, which operates long international routes.

Passengers will be able to check email, browse social media, work, play online games and stream their favorite movies and TV shows.

And unlike some airlines that charge for Wi-Fi or restrict free access to certain passengers, Air Tahiti Nui says everyone will get it for free, whether they’re sitting in Poerava Business Class, Moana Premium or Moana Economy.

Why this is such a big deal

Anyone who has flown long-haul knows that 8 to 10 hours can feel like an eternity, especially if you’re not able to sleep. Having reliable, fast internet can make a huge difference.

Personally, I would love to disconnect when I’m on vacation but because of my line of work, that’s easier said than done. Travel writers have a difficult time truly unplugging, especially when visiting a new destination. It’s a little easier when returning to a place you’ve been many times. That’s why having reliable internet access while flying is invaluable. If I can knock out several hours of emails and writing during a flight, that means less time staring at a screen and more quality time with my family once we land.

I also think this is a smart move by Air Tahiti Nui. The airline already does a lot of things right. On both of my recent flights, the flight attendants were friendly, the food was better than I expected and the colorful cabins made the experience feel like a vacation before we even landed.

On our flight to Tahiti, the crew even handed out fragrant Tiare flowers shortly after takeoff. It’s little touches like these that make the airline special.

Adding free Starlink Wi-Fi will make the experience even better and help the airline compete with other international carriers investing in faster onboard connectivity.

One thing I’d still like Air Tahiti Nui to improve

While I’m thrilled about the upcoming Wi-Fi, I really hope the airline eventually adds power outlets to economy seats, too. Free high-speed internet is fantastic but it doesn’t do much good if your laptop or tablet runs out of battery halfway through a flight. Travelers planning to work should bring fully charged devices and check the airline’s rules for carrying portable power banks. I use TESSAN’s portable power bank which has been a lifesaver.

Still, this is a major step forward and one that makes me even more excited to fly Air Tahiti Nui again. If you’re planning a trip to Tahiti, Bora Bora or Paris in 2027, this is definitely something to look forward to. Just keep in mind that the rollout will take time, so not every flight will necessarily have Starlink when the service first launches. You can find more information on the Air Tahiti Nui website.
