Boaters off the coast of Lahaina were treated to a spectacular wildlife moment when a pod of humpback whales began breaching right near their vessel, creating what one witness called a “once-in-a-lifetime” experience.
The unforgettable encounter happened on February 19 during a whale-watching trip off the coast of Maui. Visitor Mason Cogle was vacationing with family and out on the water with Hawaii Ocean Rafting when the ocean suddenly came alive with activity.
Cogle said the group witnessed an unusual amount of whale movement during the trip, but one moment stood out above the rest.
“The absolute highlight was this rare, simultaneous triple breach,” Cogle said. “Even our guides were in disbelief. I was lucky to have my camera rolling for this once-in-a-lifetime moment.”
A breach occurs when a whale launches its massive body out of the water and crashes back down, sending spray in every direction. It’s one of the most dramatic behaviors humpback whales display and is a major highlight for whale watchers.
Seeing one breach is thrilling. Seeing three whales breach at the same time is extraordinarily rare.
A Special Place for Whale Watching
Each winter, thousands of Humpback whale migrate from cold feeding grounds in Alaska to the warm waters around Hawaii to mate and give birth. The waters surrounding Maui are considered some of the best whale-watching locations in the world, especially from December through April.
Whales are also strictly protected in Hawaiian waters, and tour operators must follow strict federal guidelines designed to prevent disturbance to the animals.
According to Cogle, whose footage was shared via Storyful, the crew did exactly that.
The tour boat maintained the required legal distance from the whales throughout the excursion. What made the encounter so special was that the whales themselves appeared to approach the boat rather than the other way around.
That kind of close-range encounter is both rare and unforgettable for visitors.
