"Reaching Key Influencers Where They Live (Online)"

  • Don't call to follow up on a press release! Trust me: If I'm interested in your pitch, I'll call you back!

  • Don't CC your whole media list.

  • Have a "tweetable" sentence or subject line with link to more (Example)

  • Party invites should have a text component (Example)

  • If you're pitching a new product send a low-res image embedded and indicate that you have high-res images available upon request or on a specific URL (Example)

  • Don't send a sample in a huge box if not necessary. Excess packaging is wasteful and turns people off.

  • Be sure to email the editor to double check on a freelance writer. I've had a couple imposters.

  • Don't just push your own clients on your Twitter account.

  • Know your media and understand what their needs are. If you're dealing with an online journalist, you know that they usually only need low-res images and have a short lead time, compared to print publications. Keep this in mind when you're pitching different types of media.

  • Malaysia PR had a personal touch

  • @TrendyTravelista Do your own media monitoring; you can't expect journalists to constantly keep you updated if/when your product has been reviewed or mentioned on their site or in their publication. Your media monitoring service should be doing this.

  • Keep your media list UP TO DATE! Always know who's doing what, what their beat is and if they've moved on or been replaced by someone new.

  • @FlyingWithFish Lots of advice, but most airlines don't seem to be listening. that has become my day job, sort of & so many are so damn dense.

  • The first thing travel companies need to learn is a consistent message, then 'tiered' content & that social media is not a fun hobby for them

  • @EverywhereTrip tell them to stop sending unsolicited press releases and treating bloggers like children. 95% of PR people do not get bloggers or how to deal with people online at all.

  • @NancyDBrown Speaking as a blogger and print journalist, I'd recommend to PR folks that they give us time to write/blog on press trips. They also need to convey to hosting properties that we need FREE internet access. I can't upload pics to accompany a lodging review on their business center computer. My two cents.

  • @NerdseyeView NO unsolicited samples.

  • @PeterShankman Get on HARO

  • @ErinFaye Read--and not just online. Don't assume you know everything. Understand influencers *and* their audiences.
